Calgary, the Gateway to the Rockies, is a city where urban vibrancy meets natural beauty. Having lived in Calgary from October 2012 to May 2013, I had the opportunity to discover many treasures in and around the city, while leaving some gems to explore for a future visit.

Bars Restaurants

Calgary is known for its diverse culinary scene. From 17th Ave, known as the “Red Mile,” to historic neighbourhoods like Inglewood, every corner offers a unique taste experience. Local craft breweries and distilleries, like Big Rock Brewery, offer an authentic taste of Alberta’s craftsmanship.

Urban Exploration

While you’re here, be sure to visit the Bow River District, where you can stroll along the picturesque riverfront, browse local craft shops and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the outdoor markets.

West Edmonton Mall

Although located in Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall is worth a visit. It’s a world unto itself, with attractions ranging from an indoor water park to an Olympic-sized ice rink.

Jasper, Banff National Parks

Visiting Jasper allowed me to immerse myself in a breathtaking mountain landscape. Banff and Kootenay National Parks are must-sees, with their turquoise waters and majestic mountains. Banff Hot Springs and Radium Hot Springs offer well-deserved relaxation after a day of exploring.

For adrenaline seekers, the surrounding mountains offer a wealth of opportunities, from paragliding to bungee jumping to whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River.

Ski Snowboard

Skiing at Lake Louise, Fernie, Sunshine Village, Kimberley and Panorama was an unforgettable experience. Each resort offers slopes for all levels, with breathtaking views.

National Parks and Hot Springs

Explore Banff and Kootenay National Parks to discover the region’s natural diversity, from snow-capped peaks to lush forests. Don’t miss Banff and Radium Hot Springs for some well-deserved relaxation after a day of outdoor adventure.

Hiking

Hikes like Hoodoos Trail Head and Peyto Glacier reveal the diversity of Alberta’s landscapes. The view of the Columbia Glacier is a sight not to be missed, offering a breathtaking panorama of the ice fields.

Paragliding in Golden, BC

Paragliding off a mountainside in Golden, BC was an exhilarating adventure, offering a unique perspective on the splendor of Canadian nature.

Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is a conservation and education center where you can get up close and personal with Canadian and exotic wildlife.

Lake Louise and surrounding area

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Lake Louise offers spectacular scenery year-round. In the winter, activities include skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. In the summer, hiking offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Be sure to visit the famous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for a luxurious lakeside experience.

Missed Activities

Some of the activities I didn’t get a chance to do included visiting the Calgary Tower for a breathtaking view of the city, exploring the Heritage Park Historical Village for a trip back in time, and exploring the many hiking trails that wind through the spectacular Rocky Mountain landscapes.

In short, Calgary is a city that offers a multitude of activities for all tastes, whether for thrill seekers, nature enthusiasts or urban explorers. It is a destination that deserves to be visited and revisited, each season bringing its share of discoveries and adventures.
